The Sciliar – Catinaccio Natural Park was established in 1974 and lies between Alpe di Siusi, Catinaccio and the Tires Valley. Visitors flock to the Park to admire its geological formations even more than its wealth of flora and fauna.

Nowhere else in the Dolomites is the history of the mountains more tangible as it is here. It is no coincidence that the rock with its coral structure is called “Sciliar dolomite”. During the Ice Age, the Sciliar plateau rose above the ice flows and this explains why we can find endemic plant life such as the Alpine bellflower and the tufted horned rampion, with its beautiful shape and colours.

The Park’s Visitor Centre is located in Bagni di Lavina Bianca (1173 m) in an ancient sawmill powered by a water wheel. In the village the waters from a hot spring with beneficial properties are put to good use. A short distance away is the Nigra Pass (1688 m), offering a stunning viewpoint: the Nigra refuge is the starting point for the excursion to the traditional Hanicker dairy.
