Small places amongst majestic mountains
The Dolomites don’t only offer soaring peaks, deep lush valleys and emerald green lakes, but also some enchanting mountain villages that are worth exploring.
Ortisei/St.Ulrich/Urtijëi is the most important village of Val Gardena. Old traditions are part of life here in this Ladin valley whether expressed in the architecture, the local costumes, the wood carvings or the local language. Corvara is located at the foot of the Sassongher mountain and can be defined as the heart of tourism in Alta Badia. Madonna di Campiglio in the Brenta Dolomites is well known for its many fine hotels, art exhibitions and concerts. The village lies within the Adamello-Brenta Nature Reserve where walking, mountain biking or riding through the cool woods are a real treat. Canazei has always been the centre of Val di Fassa with its impressive mountain setting and its privileged position with access to the most famous passes in the Dolomites. Cibiana di Cadore is famous for its mural paintings depicting village life on the walls of the houses which makes it one of the most fascinating open-air museums in Italy. From here you can reach the well-preserved First World War fortress at the top of Mount Rite that has been made into a museum, the Museum in the Clouds. It is part of a Reinhold Messner project and at 2,181 metres it is the highest museum in Europe. Auronzo di Cadore winds through the forests and meadows of the pleasant Ansiei valley and is crowned by the fabulous mountains which are mirrored in the Santa Caterina lake. All these fairy-tale mountain villages are ideal places to stay in winter and summer alike and offer almost unlimited possibilities for skiing, walking, climbing, mountain biking and other activities.
