Ladin Museum

The Ladins are a minority who live in the Dolomites. The “Museum Ladin” depicts their history and culture and is an important institution in their social life today.

About 30,000 people in the Dolomites still today speak a very ancient language: Ladin. Spoken by the first inhabitants of the valleys in the Dolomites it was later influenced by the Latin-speaking Romans. The Ladin population is now spread over the three provinces of Alto Adige, Trentino and Belluno. The Ladin Museum in the Castle “De Tor” in San Martino in Badia is dedicated to its history and language as well as to its social and economic life. The geology of the area was important for the survival of the Ladins as a distinct group of people. The narrow and isolated valleys were a perfect protection against too much influence from the outside.

The museum organises exhibitions, concerts, seminars and lectures on the Ladin language and culture all year around.
